900 boxes of RUTF expected to arrive in Lubumbashi (Democratic Republic of Congo) today, just in time for Christmas. This is the 15th shipping container for Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) that we have shipped to malnourished children. Our partner, World Vision DRC will implement an integrated Nutrition, Health, Water and Sanitation program in Mitwaba territory in the “Triangle de la Mort”. This project will provide direct nutrition treatment to beneficiaries comprising of mothers and children under five years old. World Vision seeks to provide for the stabilisation and treatment of 739 severely acutely malnourished children under 5 years of age with medical complications through Inpatient Treatment in 3 Hospitals/ Health Centres. A further 7 387 severely acutely malnourished (SAM) without complications will be treated within the Outpatient Therapeutic Programme (OTP) with Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF).
Quick Facts:
- Some 6.3 million people here in Democratic Republic of Congo are food-insecure and half of the children under five years are chronically malnourished.
- A survey conducted in 2013 showed that, in North Kivu, six people out of ten people are food- insecure, as against three out of ten two years ago.
